Repeater Node Hosting

Hosting a backbone repeater is one of the most impactful ways to support Lunenburg County Mesh. These fixed, solar-powered nodes form the always-on infrastructure that keeps the network operating.

What Is a Backbone Repeater?

A backbone repeater is a fixed radio and antenna installed outdoors at an elevated location. It is powered by solar panels and batteries and designed to operate continuously, including during power outages.

Backbone repeaters form the core infrastructure of the mesh network by relaying messages between locations without relying on internet or cellular service.

Who Makes a Good Host?

  • Elevated location (hill, ridge, tall building, tower, barn, mast)
  • Reasonably clear views toward other high points
  • Outdoor space for a small solar panel, battery, and antenna
  • Willingness to host long-term community infrastructure

You do not need technical experience, internet access, or equipment to host. Location and permission matter most.

See Repeater Node Planning page for links to useful tools. Helps ensure your suggestion/location is viable.

What Hosting Involves

  • Allowing installation of a small outdoor node (with your approval)
  • Providing space for solar power and an antenna
  • Allowing occasional maintenance access (with notice)
  • Letting the node operate continuously

Installation, configuration, and maintenance are handled with support from the group.

Privacy and Safety

  • Nodes do not monitor personal communications
  • No personal data is collected by hosting a node
  • Installations are weather-safe and securely mounted
  • Exact locations are not shared publicly without consent

Hosting a node does not make you responsible for network traffic.

What Hosting Is Not

  • Not a replacement for emergency services
  • Not internet access
  • Not public access to your property
  • Not a technical troubleshooting obligation
